In Memory

Marilyn J. Lindsey (Ryan)

Many thanks to Sherry Smith for this obituary information:

September 8, 2017

Marilyn Jean Lindsey Ryan’s adventure in life began on April 2, 1950. She was called home on September 6, 2017. She died from complications of Post-Polio Syndrome.

Marilyn contracted Polio at the age of two. She spent numerous summers undergoing corrective surgeries on her affected right leg. Finally, as a young lady, she had a rare unheard of surgery in which her right leg was lengthened to assist her in walking. She went from wheelchairs to crutches to braces. She thought she had finally won the battle over Polio and had a near normal life, however, she was confronted with severe fatigue, muscle and bone pain some 30 to 40 years later. She then faced a return to the use of canes, crutches, walkers and wheelchairs. She was soon diagnosed with Post-Polio Syndrome, a lingering disease in which primary nerves are destroyed early in life, forcing secondary nerves to take over far too soon. Despite this disease, Marilyn rarely displayed any outward signs of discomfort. She was cheerful and outgoing throughout her life.

She was born in San Francisco, CA to Ralph Mark and Neva Williams Lindsey. She lived in San Francisco, Kentfield, and Greenbrae, CA and attended elementary as well as high school until 1968. She attended and graduated from Brigham Young University.

Marilyn moved to Ogden, UT following graduation and had a very successful 35 year career at Weber State University in Health Professions, Administration, and Alumni/Development Services. She truly loved her job and the wonderful students, faculty and staff she worked with. While at Weber State, she met and married her best friend and love of her life, Douglas Paul Ryan, on October 11, 1978. Their marriage was solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple.

Marilyn and Doug had a wonderful marriage and delighted in raising their two strong and independent, “red-haired” children, Mark and Lindsey, which was the name of her Great, Great Grandfather (Mark Lindsey).

Marilyn was always a faithful and very active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many callings in Relief Society, Primary, MIA, Sunday School and most recently as a Family Home Evening Coordinator at the Legacy House along with Doug. How she loved those good brothers and sisters. They will miss her greatly.

Her greatest joy in life was being the “Mémé” to her 8 grandchildren. They are the icing on the cake. They will miss her endless support, her smiling face and her constant undying love.

Marilyn taught her children the gospel of Jesus Christ through teaching and by example. She provided a legacy of faith, sacrifice and love for her beloved posterity.

Marilyn is survived by her husband(Doug), her two children; Mark John (Wendy) Ryan of North Ogden, UT, and Lindsey Ann (Shane) Archibald, of Layton UT, 8 grandchildren: Alison, Adam Mark, John Paul and Jenner William Ryan; Stephen Andrew, Dallin Wade, Owen Ryan, and Ellie Lynn Archibald.

She is also survived by two brothers James Mark (Carol) Lindsey, Salt Lake City, UT and Robert W. Lindsey, Stockton, CA; and a sister-in-law, Linda Lindsey, Crystal Beach, TX and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Ralph and Neva Lindsey, her brother David Lindsey and 2 nephews; Mark Adam Lindsey and Jonathan Lindsey.

To the great people of McKay Dee Hospital. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff who fought so valiantly to save her life and for those other staff members who looked in and supported our family. You helped our family through the absolute worst day of our lives. You gave us hope, you showed us love. You wept with us. You will be forever etched in our hearts and minds. May God bless you for your kindness.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you would give to our local charities. Marilyn would appreciate this. Help those in need. Serve others.
